Playing the Piano by Ear
Let's play piano by ear!
Now that you have learned some basic piano chords, it's time to apply what you have learned!
* Sing some of the nursery rhymes or hymns that you know and try to experiment on the chords. From the C chord, is it going to the G chord?
Example:
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday, happy birthday
Happy birthday to you.
(Use these chord progression: C-G-G-C-C-F-C-G,C)
This is a very simple example but you will notice that it is using a pattern or chord progression that corresponds to the melody and that is what playing by ear is all about. It is the skill to predict the succeeding chords in a song and is developed through constant listening, playing (the instrument) and analyzing the patterns that are being used in a specific song.
Some of these patterns or chord progressions are:
* V-I
* II-V-I
* I-IV-I-V
* I-IV-I-V-I
* I-IV-V-IV-I
* VI-II-V-I
* III-VI-II-V-I
* VII-III-VI-II-V-I
* I-III-II-V-I
Through constant practice, in time you would be able to predict the succeeding chords that are being used in a certain song.
