BIRTHPLACE : Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada
BACKGROUND
Diana Krall was born in a musical family. Both her parents played the piano and her grandmother was a singer. Studied classical piano by the age of four and joined her high school jazz band. Influenced mainly by her father.
HIGHLIGHTS
Started playing professionally at age fifteen in a Nanaimo restaurant.
1981 at age 17, won a Vancouver Jazz Festival scholarship to Berklee College of Music in Boston where she studied for 1 ½ years then returned back to Canada.
While playing in Nanaimo, she was discovered by Jeff Hamilton and bassist Ray Brown who convinced her to go to Los Angeles. With a Canadian Arts Council study grant she studied with Jimmy Rowles. He encouraged Diana to sing as well as she plays the piano.
1984 went back to Canada, stayed in Toronto where she studied with jazz pianist Don Thompson
1990 relocated to New York. Had a regular gig in Boston with her own trio ( bassist Whit Browne and drummer Klaus Suonsaari)
1993 released her debut album Stepping Out on Justin Time Records (a Montreal-based label) with long-time mentor Ray Brown, Jeff Hamilton and John Clayton
1994 Only Trust her Heart on GRP Records
