Hello there! My name is Carlos Semilla, the owner of this website. I am a self-taught professional musician based in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada. Thanks for visiting my site and I hope you are having fun as you look through these free piano lessons.
I have been teaching piano for fifteen years now but I also teach classical guitar, bass guitar and voice lessons. I am currently teaching music full time doing mobile piano lessons with my own students and students at
Mark’s Music Lessons,
a music school at Coquitlam, BC, Canada.
I started having piano lessons when I was eleven with a private piano tutor. Though we don't have a piano then, I had a very kind teacher who allowed me to practice my piano lessons at their house for one hour everyday after school. My dad bought an old guitar from which I learned the basic chords, bass patterns and the basic chord progressions associated with music. I also learned the relationship between the piano and the guitar that I was able to play my piano pieces on my guitar.
When I was eighteen, I played with my dad’s band (he was a professional drummer). I was exposed to the “real music” (mainstream jazz) when I was young. I then studied at Ryan Cayabyab Music School in Manila, Philippines and learned about jazz piano improvisation, the chords and the scales associated with the chords. I like transcribing music from records and figuring out the other chord alternatives in a certain song. For me, it is challenging and educational. Though I like playing jazz piano, I like playing church music, classical music, and other easy listening music too.
Jazz pianists have always fascinated me when they play because of the spontaneity of the ideas that come out of their playing. It’s like composing music “on the spot”. I never thought that I would be able to know some of the secrets of these piano players and that I would be sharing them through this website. After playing with my dad’s band as a bass player for three years with different piano players, and many years playing with different bands (as a piano player or bass player) in the Philippines, Macau, China, Lisbon, Portugal and Canada, I became accustomed to the different chord progressions that they (arrangers and composers) use in today’s music, the contemporary music. Whether it is classical, jazz, pop, folk, or any other genres, they use some kind of chord patterns or chord progressions (they call it cadence in classical music). All you really need is the knowledge, time, dedication and passion to learn. It is my desire to share and help other pianists to be able to play the piano instrument in the shortest time possible. I finished doing my first CD (it's called "God's Love") two years ago and am working on my second.
If you are looking for a music teacher for yourself or your kids, I offer lessons for piano, classical guitar, bass guitar and voice. I also play at
weddings
and senior care homes.
